Back In the Saddle
I’m back and apologize for the absence……
There’s a lot O’ Stuff going on in the world this weekend, but a paucity of decent articles….
#1 The NYT has an excellent artcile on Medicare in the Economic View section. Since there has been a ton of press and Obama administration push to spend more money upfront to “fix” healthcare, it’s good for someone to encapsulate what the problem is:
“It’s also hard to convince the American public that the solution to insufficient health insurance is to tax health insurance. And such a one-time tax increase would postpone but not eliminate the need to come to grips with ever-rising Medicare costs.”
Great point and one I tried to make on Friday on CNBC.
#2 Is a long article on the massive amount of global government debt by the Economist.

A nice graphic represntation on why EM (emerging markets) are seen to be outperforming the developed world. One problem, this graph doesn’t include the loans being made by Chinese banks this year.
#3 BusinessWeek runs an article on how the massive reach of the government into the private sector and the danger. It seems that the Republicans are finally finding their voice on an issue of tremendous significance.
“ The Republican Party of Florida put it a little more bluntly, headlining its criticism of the Obama Administration’s forays into business (and some other issues) “Back in the USSR” and decrying that the Administration has more czars—over health care, autos, executive pay, and more—than did three centuries of Romanov rule.”
The Chicago Tribune carries the totals: “Since czar isn’t an official job title, the number is somewhat in the eye of the beholder. The magazine Foreign Policy’s blog back in April counted 18, though the author included diplomatic “special envoys,” which have been used by previous presidents and have not widely been called czars before. Either way, Feinberg didn’t make the cut. Reuters this month counted “as many as 21″ czars but didn’t provide a list.”
However you slice it, Big Brother is Big and Getting Bigger…..
I’m heading to DC this week and will take a pulse on what’s happening on taxes and healthcare.
